Screening:  SUGAR CANE ALLEY (RUE CASES NÉGRES)

In celebration of the 35th anniversary of its US release, the CaribbeanLens International Film Festival is pleased to screen Euzhan’s Palcy’s SUGAR CANE ALLEY. Set on a plantation in 1930s Martinique, SUGAR CANE ALLEY is a coming-of-age drama about a bright, mischievous 11-year-old orphan and his tough, wise grandmother, determined to give him an education. Robert Redford at Sundance was so impressed with the film and the young director that he became her American Godfather.  SUGAR CANE ALLEY garnered Ms. Palcy a Cesar Award for Best First Feature, making her the first woman and the first Black to receive this prestigious award.
